PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team suffered its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) loss of the year on April 16, as it fell to Marist, 7-6, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
The Friars got on the board first as graduate student Mark Dillon (Gaithersburg, Md.) notched the only goal of the first quarter for either team at the 7:00 minute mark. Dillon's goal was assisted by sophomore Jackson Fallon (Arlington, Mass.).
The Red Foxes took advantage of a 3:00 minute penalty in the second quarter, capitalizing with three-straight man-up goals in a span of 56-seconds. Senior Devin McBride (Marblehead, Mass.) stopped the bleeding with a goal at the 6:17 mark of the second quarter to make the score, 3-2, off an assist from graduate student Bennett Murphy (Princeton, N.J.). Marist answered back with two-straight goals at the 3:49 and 2:02 marks to push its lead to 5-2.
Murphy got the Friars back within two goals (5-3) as he tallied a goal of his own with 6:55 left in the third off a feed from sophomore Colin Tigh (Garden City, N.Y.). Marist answered the call, once again, as Corey Zindel gave the Red Foxes as 6-3 lead heading into the fourth and final quarter.
Murphy tallied his second goal of the day at the 6:16 mark of the fourth quarter off a feed from McBride to make the score 6-4 in favor of Marist, but Ryan Sharkey quickly halted the Friars' momentum with a goal just 23-seconds later to push the lead to 7-4. Providence junior Bobby Labadini (Westford, Mass.) then tallied back-to-back goals at 5:00 and 1:08, but the rally fell short for PC, and Marist earned a 7-6 win.
Providence returns to action on Saturday, April 19 against cross-city rival Brown. The game will be played on the campus of Brown University and is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
