Softball Splits Double Header Against UConn, 6-0, 0-6

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team split a BIG EAST Conference double header against the University of Connecticut Saturday afternoon at Raymond Field. The Friars belted four home runs en route to a 6-0 win in the first game, but the Huskies hit three home runs to take the second contest, 6-0. With the split, the Friars are now 13-11-1 overall and 1-1 in the BIG EAST. UConn moved to 11-11 and 1-1 in league play.

In the first game, sophomore Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calif.) pitched her third consecutive shutout as she allowed just two hits and struck out two batters in seven innings of action. Classmate Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) hit a two-out home run in the second inning to give PC a 1-0 lead. The lead increased to 2-0 in the third inning when sophomore Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.) led off with a base hit, stole second base and advanced to third on a sacrifice by classmate Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.). Revens then came around to score on a single by junior Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.).

Junior Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.) hit her third home run of the season in the fourth inning to give PC a three-run cushion (3-0). In the sixth inning, sophomore Chrisrty Becker (Atlanta, Ga.) added her team-leading fourth home run of the season, while Bertels smacked a two-run home run to complete the scoring. For Bertels, it marked her third home run of the season and her first career two-home run game.

In the second game, Rachael Crossin pitched a complete game shutout and struck out eight batters to lead UConn to a 6-0 win. The Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI double by Justyne Roy. UConn then erupted for four runs in the sixth inning thanks to a three-run home run by Jillian Ortega and a solo home run by Julianne Towers. Danielle Del Ponte capped off the scoring in the seventh inning with a home run.

The Friars are back in action on Sunday, March 30 when they host Marist at Raymond Field. The first game of the double header will begin at 1:00 p.m.
