PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Christy Becker batted 4-for-7 with three home runs, four runs and seven RBIs in two games to lead the Providence College softball team to a double header sweep against the Maine Saturday afternoon at Raymond Field. The Friars posted a 10-3 win in the first game and took the second contest by a score on 7-6.
In the first game, the Black Bears took a 1-0 lead when Terren Hall hit the first pitch of the second inning over the center field fence for her third home run of the season. The Friars responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four runs on five hits to take a 4-1 lead. The Friars loaded the bases with one out and sophomore Julie Fowler hit a single to center field to drive in two runs. One batter later, classmate Jenna Garcia hit a two-run single to center field to cap off the scoring in the inning. After the Black Bears cut the lead to 4-2 in the third inning, junior Gina Rossi drilled a line drive home run to right center to give the Friars a three-run lead (5-2). It marked Rossi's second home run of the season.
The Friars increased their lead to 8-2 in the fourth inning as they hit back-to-back home runs with two outs. Junior Mary Rose Sheehy belted a two-run shot to left center (her second of the season), while Becker smacked her first of the season, a solo shot to center field.
The Black Bears added one run in the fifth inning to make the score, 8-3, but could not get any closer as the Friars scored twice in the sixth to make the score 10-3. Becker hit her second home run in the sixth inning, as she connected on a two-run blast.
PC sophomore Danielle Bertolette pitched five innings and allowed three runs on four hits while striking out four batters to record her third win of the season. Junior Alisha Levin pitched two innings and allowed no runs on two hits.
In the second game, Maine (0-26) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Jordan McClain hit and RBI double to left center. PC (9-10) responded with three runs in the third inning and gained a 3-1 lead. Becker, freshman Justine Stratton and Rossi each hit RBI singles. The Black Bears tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth inning on RBI doubles Kristen Calvetti and Erin Iandoli.
In the bottom half of the fourth inning, Becker hit her third home run of the day, a three-run shot, to give PC a 6-3 lead. Maine bounced back in the fifth inning with three runs to tie the game at 6-6. The Friars took the lead for good (7-6) in the bottom of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Garcia hit a sacrifice fly to score Rossi.
Junior Jennifer Maccio earned the win, while freshman Kathryn Sullivan held the Black Bears scoreless in the seventh inning to earn the save. Fowler and Sheehy each batted 4-for-6 with two RBIs in the two games, while Rossi added three hits and two RBIs.
PC is back in action on Tuesday, March 25 when it hosts Qunnipiac in a home double header, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
