ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Providence College softball team defeated Gardner-Webb, 4-1, on Saturday, March 15 in the second day of competition at the Winthrop Adidas Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. The Friars also were scheduled to play Vermont at 5:00 p.m., but the game was postponed because of rain. The game will now be played on Sunday, March 15 at 11:00 a.m.
Junior Jennifer Maccio led the way for the Friars as she pitched a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits and striking out two batters. PC took the lead in the third inning as sophomore Katelyn Revens singled, stole second base and advanced to third on a base hit by junior Mary Rose Sheehy. Revens then scored on a sacrifice fly by classmate Christy Becker. The Friars increased the lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning when sophomore Julie Fowler walked, advanced to second base on a sacrifice by classmate Jenna Garcia and came around to score on Sheehy's double. In the sixth inning, Gardner-Webb cut the lead in half (2-1), but the Friars scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning as sophomore Teresa Bertels connected on a two-run home run to make the score, 4-1. It marked her first career home run.
Sheehy batted 3-for-3 with one RBI, while Bertels had one hit and two RBIs.
The Friars will close out competition at the Winthrop Adidas Invitational on Sunday, March 16 against Vermont at 11:00 a.m.
