PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (1-2, 0-0 BIG EAST): The Providence College field hockey team enters Wednesday's game against Holy Cross with a 1-2 overall record. The Friars started the year with back-to-back losses to Vermont (1-0) and 20th-ranked Boston University (2-1), but won their most recent game against Yale (2-1) on September 1 in New Haven, Conn.
Senior Abby Maguire (Southbury, Conn.), sophomore Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) and freshman Ashlyn Hudson (Stoughton, Mass.) have each scored one goal this season. Maguire's goal came against Yale in PC's 2-1 victory and proved to be the game winner. Senior Michalagh Stoddard (Norwood, Mass.) leads the team in assists (two), through the first three games of the year.
Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) has played 210 minutes in the cage and has recorded a 1-2 record for PC. She has allowed four goals and made nine saves for a 1.33 goals against average and a 0.692 save percentage.
The match-up with Holy Cross on Wednesday night marks the 2007 home opener for Providence at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. Providence is 1-0 all-time vs. Holy Cross at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex - a 4-3 victory during the 2005 season. Last year, the Friars defeated Holy Cross, 1-0, in Worcester, Mass. Providence is 4-1 vs. Holy Cross under the direction of sixth-year Head Coach Diane Madl. The only loss to the Crusaders under Madl's guidance dates back to the 2004 season, when Holy Cross defeated the Friars, 4-1, in Worcester, Mass.
HOLY CROSS (1-1, 0-0 PATRIOT LEAGUE): Holy Cross enters Wednesday's field hockey game against Providence College with a 1-1 overall record. The Crusaders started off the season with a 7-1 victory over Siena on August 28 in Worcester, Mass. In the team's most recent game against Boston College on September 2, the Crusaders were defeated, 7-2, in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
Four Crusaders are tied for the team lead in points with four and include Sara O'Coin (one goal, two assists), Kara Gonnerman (two goals), Alanna Silorski (two goals) and Brittany Gildea (two goals). A total of 10 players on the roster have registered at least one point through two games.
Erin Singleton has played 90 minutes in the cage this season for Holy Cross. She has allowed four goals and has made nine saves for a 0.692 save percentage and a 3.11 goals against average. Singleton has a 1-1 record on the season. Kelly Casey has played 50 minutes in goal this season. She has registered nine saves and four goals against for a 5.60 goals against average and a 0.692 save percentage.
