PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (5-2, 1-0 BIG EAST): The Providence College field hockey team enters Wednesday's game against Northeastern with a 5-2 overall record. The Friars are in the midst of a five-game win streak and have earned shut-out victories in each of their last four contests.
Thirteen Friars have cracked the scoring column this season through seven games. Senior Abby Maguire (Southbury, Conn.) and senior Michalagh Stoddard (Norwood, Mass.) lead the way with eight points each. Maguire has four goals, while Stoddard has recorded three goals and two assists. Sophomore Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) and freshman Julie Ruggieri (Barrington, R.I.) each have recorded seven points. They each have recorded three goals and one assist. Junior Jessica Lane (South Windsor, Conn.) leads the team in assists (seven) and is ranked seventh in the nation among NCAA Division I players in assists per game (0.86).
Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) has played 459 minutes in the cage this season and has recorded a 5-2 record, including two shut-out victories. She has allowed just four goals and owns a 0.61 goals against average and a 0.857 save percentage. Chamberlain also has teamed with graduate student Kim Vesling (Pittsford, N.Y.) in goal to help the Friars post two team shutouts against Georgetown and Dartmouth. Vesling has played a total of 31 minutes this season, has not allowed a goal and has recorded three saves. The two have combined for an impressive team goals against average of 0.57. According to the latest NCAA Division I statistical release, Chamberlain ranks second in the nation in save percentage (0.857) and goals against average (0.61).
As a team, Providence ranks among the top-10 nationally in five statistical categories, and include: goals against average (third, 0.57), scoring margin (eighth, 2.0), shutouts per game (0.57), assists per game (2.71) and save percentage (third, 0.871).
Through seven games, Providence has outshot its opponents 115-49, including a 70-31 advantage in shots on goal. The Friars also have held a decisive edge in penalty corners, 43-28.
Last season, Providence defeated the Huskies of Northeastern, 3-2, on September 8, 2006 in Boston, Mass. The Friars are 1-1 all-time vs. the Huskies since Head Coach Diane Madl took over the program in 2002. Northeastern's only victory during that time came in 2005 (5-2) in Providence, R.I.
NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY (2-4, 0-0 CAA): The Northeastern University field hockey team enters Wednesday's game against Providence with a 2-4 overall record. The Huskies lost their most recent game on September 15 against Boston University by a score of 3-2. Three of the Huskies' four losses have been decided by one goal. The team's two wins have come against Ball State (4-1) on September 2 and Quinnipiac (2-1) on September 12.
Harriet Hoyer leads the Huskies in scoring with six points on three goals. Pam Aldridge is second among her teammates in scoring with five points on two goals and one assists. Aldridge is followed on the list by Ashley Bascetta who has four points (two goals).
Liz Centofanti has played every minute for Northeastern in goal this season through six games (420 minutes). She has allowed 14 goals and recorded 35 saves for a 0.714 save percentage and a 2.33 goals against average.
