Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Versus Yale, 7-1, 8-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team defeated Yale, 7-1, 8-0, in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon on Senior Day at Raymond Field. With the two wins, the Friars improved to 22-18 overall, while Yale fell to 18-20.

The Friars used a six-run third inning en route to a 7-1 victory in the first game. After two scoreless innings, PC took a 6-0 lead in the bottom half of the third inning. The Friars loaded the bases with no one out and junior Samantha Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) hit a double to plate the first two runs of the game. Sophomore Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.) also hit an RBI single and the Friars took advantage of four errors.

The Bulldogs cut the lead to 6-1 in the fourth inning when Jessica Meyer singled to left center to drive in Megan Enyeart. However, Yale could not get any closer. Freshman Christy Becker (San Diego, Calif.) increased PC's lead to 7-1 when she belted a solo home run to left field. It marked her sixth home run of the season.

Senior Rachel Bartholomew (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) finished with two hits in the first contest and became the school's all-time leader in hits (205). Senior Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) earned her 11th win of the season as she pitched four innings, allowed one run on eight hits and struck out three batters. Sophomore Alisha Levin (Fort Campbell, Ky.) tossed three innings and allowed just one hit, while striking out three batters.

In the second game, freshman Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) batted 3-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs to lead PC to an 8-0 victory in five innings. The Friars scored twice in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Garcia led off the inning with her fifth home run of the season, while Rossi drew a bases loaded walk. The lead increased to 6-0 in the fourth inning as the Friars scored four runs. Garcia smacked her second home run of the game (sixth overall) to make the score, 3-0. Pittman and senior Katie Ross (Middleboro, Mass.) also had RBI singles in the fourth inning. The Friars put the game away in the fifth inning with two more runs. Senior Caroline Santilli (Westwood, Mass.) hit a one-out double and came around to score PC's seventh run on a single by Garcia. Pittman capped off the game with an RBI single. She finished with two hits, two runs and two RBIs.

Sophomore Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) improved to 7-3 as she pitched five innings and allowed just two hits and struck out two batters.

The Friars return to action Friday, April 27 with a doubleheader at South Florida. The BIG EAST match-up is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. in Tampa, Fla.
