PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College softball team was defeated in a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Raymond Field. Villanova posted a 6-4 win in the first game and recorded a 1-0 victory in the second contest.

Providence (20-17, 6-10 BIG EAST) took a 3-0 first inning lead in the first game. The Friars benefitted from four consecutive walks to score the game's first run and sophomore Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.) hit a two-run single to give PC a three-run edge. However, Villanova (21-21-1, 3-9 BIG EAST) plated three runs in the third inning to even the score. Jess O'Boyle capped off the inning with an RBI single down the right field line to score Cassie Koenig. The Wildcats grabbed a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning when Eryn Teague homered to left field. The Friars tied the game (4-4) in the fifth inning when sophomore Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) hit a single to score senior Rachel Bartholomew (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) who led off the inning with a double. The Wildcats responded in the sixth inning as Teague hit her second home run of the game to make the score, 5-4. For Teague, it marked her fifth home run of the season. Villanova added one more run in the seventh inning to complete the scoring.

The Friars finished with 10 hits, two more then the Wildcats. Rossi had three hits, while Bartholomew and Sheehy had two hits each. With her two hits, Bartholomew now has 203 for her career, one shy of tying a school record. Laura Determan earned her 12th win of the season as she pitched a complete game, allowed four runs on 10 hits and struck out five batters.

Pitching dominated the second game as the Wildcats prevailed, 1-0. PC sophomore Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) pitched seven innings, allowed one run (unearned) on two hits and struck out four batters. However, Villanova's Kat Walsh held the Friars scoreless, allowing four hits and striking out three batters to earn her sixth win of the season. The Wildcats scored the lone run of the game in the third inning when Danielle Maricle crossed the plate after an error. The Friars had a chance to even the score in the seventh inning as they had the bases loaded, but they could not capitalize. Rossi and freshman Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.) had two hits each for PC. Rossi finished with a total of five hits in the two games.

The Friars are back in action on Tuesday, April 24 when they play a single game at Harvard, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
