PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team scored 26 runs on 30 hits in a doubleheader sweep over the University of Rhode Island Wednesday afternoon at Raymond Field. The Friars posted a 17-5 win in the first game and a 9-1 victory in the second contest.
Providence (17-15) scored a season-high 17 runs in the first game en route to the win. The Friars took a 3-0 lead in the first inning when sophomore Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) belted a three-run home run. The lead stretched to four runs in the second inning when junior Samantha Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) singled to center field. However, URI (7-24) evened the score in the third inning, scoring four runs on one hit. Tara Hiteman provided the big hit as she drove in three runs with a bases-clearing double.
The Friars scored eight runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 12-4 lead. Sheehy hit her second three-run home run of the game, while freshman Christy Becker (San Diego, Calif.) hit her fifth home run of the season to help the Friars to the eight-run inning. The Friars put the game away in the fourth inning as they scored five runs. Becker drove in two runs in the fourth inning, while senior Rachel Bartholomew (Aliso Viejo, Calif.), Sheehy and sophomore Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.) each drove in one run.
Sophomore Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) earned the win as she pitched five innings, allowed three earned runs on six hits and struck four batters. In all, six Friars had multiple-hit games, including Sheehy, Becker, Rossi and Pittman who had three hits each. In addition to her three hits, Sheehy had four runs and seven RBIs.
In the second game, the Friars jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead and never looked back en route to a 9-1 win. The Friars added another run in the second inning on an RBI single by Pittman. The lead increased to 5-0 in the third inning as freshmen Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calif.) and Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) each hit RBI singles. URI cut the lead to 5-1 in the fifth inning when Alyssa Martino belted a solo home run center field. The Friars scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning, highlighted by Garcia's's two-run home run. PC capped off the scoring in the sixth inning when Becker scored on a error.
Senior Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) earned her eighth win of the season as she pitched four innings, allowed one run on one hit and struck out eight batters. Surosky struck out the first six batters she faced. Sophomore Alisha Levin (Fort Campbell, Ky.) allowed just one hit and struck out three batters in two innings of action. Garcia finished with four hits, three runs and three RBIs.
The Friars are back in action on Thursday, April 19 with a single game against Holy Cross, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
