PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team split a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader against Notre Dame Saturday afternoon at Raymond Field. The Fighting Irish posted a 10-1 win in the first game, however, the Friars belted three, three-run home runs in the second game en route to a 9-0 triumph. It marked PC's first ever victory over Notre Dame in 26 tries. With the split, the Friars moved to 15-15 overall and 4-8 in the BIG EAST. Notre Dame, which had its nine-game league win streak snapped, moved to 20-14 overall and 9-1 in the conference.

In the first game, Notre Dame scored the only runs it would need in the third inning and went on to record a 10-1 win. Katie Laing's double to right center drove in the first run of the game, while Heather Johnson singled to drive in two more runs and make the score, 3-0. The Irish added three more runs in the fourth inning when Gessica Hufnagle belted a three-run home run as Notre Dame increased its advantage to six runs. In the fifth inning, the Irish put the game away by scoring four more runs. The Friars plated their lone run in the bottom half of the third inning when freshman Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) singled to right field to drive in senior Katie Ross (Middleboro, Mass.), who had doubled.

UND's Brittney Bargar earned the win as she pitched five innings, allowed one run on four hits and struck out four batters. Stephanie Brown, Johnson and Hufnagle each finished with two hits for the Irish. Hufnagle also drove in five of the team's 10 runs.

The second game was a different story as the Friars hit three, three-run home runs to post a 9-0 victory. PC jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead when senior Rachel Bartholomew (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) hit an opposite field home run. It marked her team-leading eighth home run of the season. In the second inning, the Friars stretched their lead to 6-0 when Garcia hit her third home run of the season. Christy Becker (San Diego, Calif.) ended the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when she hammered the fourth home run of her freshman season. Bartholomew finished with two hits, two runs and three RBIs, while Becker also added two hits and three RBIs.

Sophomore Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) recorded the win as she pitched five innings, allowed just three hits and struck out two batters to improve to 4-1 on the season.

The Friars are back in action on Sunday, April 15 when they take on No. 18/14 DePaul in a BIG EAST doubleheader. The first game is slated to start at 10:00 a.m.
