Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Versus Fairfield

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team recorded 19 runs on 28 hits en route to a doubleheader sweep over Fairfield Tuesday afternoon at Raymond Field. The Friars posted a 9-0 win in the first game and took the second game, 10-3.

In the first game, Providence (14-14) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a home run to left center field by senior Rachel Bartholomew (Aliso Viejo, Calif.). The Friars added two more runs in the inning as senior Katie Ross (Middleboro, Mass.) and Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calif.) each drove in one run. PC put the game away in the sixth inning, plating six runs to complete the scoring. Bertolette led off the inning with a home run. After freshman Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) and junior Samantha Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) reached base, Bartholomew belted a three-run home run over the left field fence to make the score, 7-0. For Bartholomew, who finished with two home runs and four RBIs, it marked her team-leading seventh home run of the season. Bertolette, who also had four RBIs, capped off the inning with a two-run single, her third hit in the first game.

Senior pitcher Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) earned the win as she pitched four and one-third innings and allowed no runs on three hits and struck out five batters.

The Stags (9-16) jumped out to a 1-0 first inning lead in the second game when Meghan Borst hit a single through the left side to score Kristie Trifiolis, who led off with a single. The Friars responded in the third inning as they scored four times to take a 4-1 lead. Bartholomew hit a two-run double, while Ross belted a two-run home run to help PC to a three-run advantage after three innings. For Ross, it marked her fourth home run of the season.

Fairfield climbed back to within, 4-3, in the fourth inning with two runs on RBI singles by Breanne Morschauser and Kristen D'Alessandro. However, the Friars responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to increase their lead to 8-3. After Pittman hit an RBI single to make the score, 5-3, Bartholomew reached base on a single and then sophomore Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) smacked a line drive, three-run home run to centerfield. PC added two more runs in the sixth inning to complete the scoring. Sophomore Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) earned the win as she pitched four innings and allowed one earned run on four hits and struck out three batters. Pittman and freshman Christy Becker (San Diego, Calif.) recorded three hits each, while Ross and Sheehy had two hits and three RBIs each. Borst finished with two hits and one RBI for the Stags.

The Friars are back in action on Saturday, April 14 when they play a BIG EAST doubleheader against Notre Dame at PC's Raymond Field beginning at noon.
