Box Score

HAMDEN, Conn. - The Providence College softball team defeated Quinnipiac, 8-4, in eight innings in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon in Hamden, Conn. In the second game, the Friars led, 4-3, after four innings, however the game was suspended because of darkness. As a result, the contest is not considered an official game because five innings were not played.

The Friars (10-10) took a 1-0 first inning lead when senior Rachel Bartholomew (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) singled to score freshman Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.), who walked with one out. The Bobcats (4-11) scored twice in the second inning and added two more runs in the third when Katie Allendorfer belted a two-run home run as Quinnipiac led 4-1. The score remained the same until the sixth inning when the Friars rallied to tie the game, 4-4, and force extra innings. Freshman Christy Becker (San Diego, Calif.) hit a two-out, three-run home run to even the score. For Becker, it marked her third career home run.

The Friars completed the comeback in the eighth inning, scoring four times en route to the win. Freshman Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) and Becker each drove in single runs in the eighth inning, while PC took advantage of two errors to score two more runs. Senior Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) earned the win as she pitched eight innings, allowed four runs on nine hits and recorded five strikeouts. Surosky (5-5) did not allow a run in the last five innings.

The Friars are back in action on Saturday, March 31 with a doubleheader at Seton Hall beginning at noon.
