PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team and Syracuse split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in the BIG EAST Conference opener for both teams. The Friars won the first game, 3-2, on a walk-off home run by senior Katie Ross (Middleboro, Mass.) in the eighth inning, but the Orange bounced back to take the second game, 3-0.
The Friars rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the first game to record a 3-2 win in eight innings. Ross belted a two-out, walk-off home run in the eighth inning to lead the Friars. It marked Ross' second home run of the season. Trailing, 2-0, going into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Friars loaded the bases with one out and scored two unearned runs to even the score. Sophomore Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) singled to drive in the first run, while freshman Christy Becker (San Diego, Calif.) drove in the second run with a hard ground out to first base.
The Orange took the lead in the first inning when junior Chanel Roehner doubled to right center to score sophomores Tonye McCorkle and Heather Kim who had singled. Syracuse freshman pitcher Brittany Gardner held the Friars scoreless for six innings. She allowed just one earned run on 10 hits and struck out five batters. PC senior right-hander Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) allowed two runs in the first inning and held the Orange without a run the rest of the way to earn her fourth win of the season. Surosky (4-4) pitched eight innings, allowed nine hits and struck out two batters.
In the second game, Roehner (4-4) pitched a complete game shutout as she held the Friars to just two hits to pickup her fourth victory of the season. Just like the first game, the Orange jumped ahead to a 2-0 lead after one inning. Kim hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in the game's first run, while Roehner singled to left center to drive in the second run. Syracuse added another run in the third inning to complete the scoring. Friar freshman pitcher Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calif.) went six innings and allowed just two earned runs on six hits.
With the split, the Friars are now 9-8 overall and 1-1 in the BIG EAST. Syracuse moved to 8-20 overall and 1-1 in league play. The Friars are back in action on Sunday, March 25 with a home BIG EAST doubleheader versus Pittsburgh, beginning at 10:00 a.m. The Orange will play UConn tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. at PC's Raymond Field.
