ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Providence College softball team posted a pair of victories in the final day of the Winthrop/adidas Invitational on Sunday, March 11. PC defeated, North Carolina A&T, 13-12, in eight innings and blanked Akron, 1-0, in the second game.
Against North Carolina A&T, the Friars trailed, 6-0, after four innings. PC then erupted for eight runs in the fifth inning to take an 8-6 lead. Freshman Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calif.) blasted a three-run home run, while classmate Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) added a solo home run to cap off the inning. The Aggies bounced back in the bottom half of the fifth inning, scoring twice to tie the game. Yahamma White hit a double to drive in two runs. In the sixth inning, the Friars went ahead, 11-8, but the Aggies rallied to even the score at 11-11 in the bottom half of the inning. Neither team scored in the seventh inning, but the Friars took the lead for good in the eighth inning as they plated two runs to make the score, 13-11. Senior Katie Ross (Middleboro, Mass.) drove in Bertolette, while senior Caroline Santilli (Westwood, Mass.) scored on an error. NC A&T cut the lead to one run in the bottom half of the eighth inning, but the Friars held for the win.
In the second game, the Friars defeated Akron, 1-0. Senior Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits and striking out eight batters. PC scored the only run it would need in the fourth inning when Santilli's infield hit drove in senior Rachel Bartholomew (Aliso Viejo, Calif.), who reached base on a single. The Zips' Lindsay Bodeker pitched seven innings, allowed one run on six hits and posted five strikeouts. Surosky was named to the Winthrop/adidas Invitational All-Tournament Team.
The Friars, winners of four consecutive games, are back in action on Friday, March 16 when they play two games at the Delaware State Classic. PC will play Delaware State at 9:00 a.m. and Monmouth at 3:00 p.m.
