PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team (29-16-1, 11-9 BIG EAST) welcomes new BIG EAST member Louisville (35-8, 13-3 BIG EAST) to Raymond Field for a conference twin bill on Thursday, May 4. It will be Senior Day for the Friars and fans are encouraged to arrive a few minutes prior to the 2:00 p.m. start time and enjoy a brief recognition ceremony. Thursday also will mark the first match up between Providence and Louisville on the softball diamond.
The Friars, who have won six of their last seven games at home, are led by junior ace Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) who has 17 wins and 168.1 innings pitched. She has fanned 153 batters and ranks among the conference leaders. Offensively, senior short stop Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) holds a team-leading .361 batting average while junior catcher Rachel Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) leads the Friars with 12 home runs and 40 RBIs, figures that ranks second and sixth overall in the conference. Bartholomew is coming off a career-high 14-game hit streak which saw her average jump 48-points from .310 to .358.
With 11 BIG EAST wins, Providence has tallied its most since the 1995 season when PC went 12-8. The Friars also have qualified for the BIG EAST Conference Tournament for the first time since 1996. The Championship will take place May 11-14 at the Belleview Softball Complex in South Bend, Ind. With the Friars currently in fifth-place, the eight-team, single-elimination tournament will be finalized at the end of conference play on Sunday, May 7.
Louisville enters Thursday's game having won its last nine consecutive. During the stretch, the Cardinals have allowed just six runs and totaled five shutouts. However, four of those runs came in a doubleheader sweep of Notre Dame on May 1.
The Cardinals are led offensively by Lacy Wood who has a team-leading .392 batting average, 14 doubles, five home runs and 34 RBIs. On the mound, junior RHP Catherine Bishop leads the team and the league with a 23-5 record, a 0.74 ERA. Bishop also has totaled 170 strikeouts in 171.0 innings. This past week Bishop led the Cardinals to a 5-0 week, earning four wins and was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week.
