PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College junior catcher Rachel Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) and sophomore second baseman Sam Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) were named to the Northeast All-Region Softball Teams on Wednesday, May 17. Bartholomew was named to the first team, while Pittman garnered second-team honors.
Bartholomew, who earned All-BIG EAST third team honors last week, led the Friars in numerous offensive categories this season, including batting average (.350), runs scored (32), hits (56), home runs (12), RBIs (42) and slugging percentage (.619). With her career high 12 home runs, Bartholomew became the College's all-time leading home run hitter as she now has 28. She also recorded a career-high 14-game hit streak and had a .983 fielding percentage which ranked third on the squad.
Pittman, who was named to the All-BIG EAST second team last week, finished third on the team with a .331 batting average and second with 51 hits. She also tied for first with 10 doubles. In addition, she had 12 multiple-hit games and had a career-high 14-game hit streak.
The Friars finished the 2006 season with a 29-19-1 overall record, including an 11-11 mark in the BIG EAST, which was good for sixth-place in the league. The 11 BIG EAST wins were the most by a Friar squad since 1995. The Friars also earned a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 1996.
