Softball Falls To South Florida In BIG EAST Doubleheader

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team (19-10, 4-6 BIG EAST) was defeated in a BIG EAST doubleheader against South Florida (36-18, 6-0 BIG EAST) on Sunday, April 9 at Raymond Field in Providence, R.I. USF won the first game, 8-3, and captured the nightcap, 3-2.

In the first game, USF took a 4-0 first inning lead. The Bulls loaded the bases and senior Krista Holle cleared them with a three-run double. Holle eventually came around to score for USF's fourth run of the inning. Senior Tiffany Stewart gave the Bulls a 5-0 lead when she hit her eighth run of the season. USF added three more runs in the eighth inning to increase its lead to 8-0. In the bottom half of the seventh inning, the Friars scored three runs, but could not get any closer. Freshman Mary Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) belted her second home run of the season to make the score 8-1. Sheehy went 3-for-3 with one RBI. Two batters later, senior Tara Sullivan (Tualatin, Ore.) smacked a two-run home run. It marked Sullivan's third home run of the season.

USF pitcher Christi Ecks returned to the pitcher's circle following the two PC home runs and was able to get the final three outs. Ecks earned the win as she pitched a complete game, allowed no runs on five hits and struck out six batters. For PC, Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) pitched three innings, before being relieved by freshman Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) who pitched the remaining four innings.

In the second game, USF took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when junior Danielle Urbanik hit the first pitch she saw for a home run. However, the Friars responded in the third inning as junior Katie Ross (Middleboro, Mass.) hit her first collegiate home run to tie the game, 1-1. Ross and senior Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) each finished with two hits.

The game remained tied until the seventh inning when senior Christie Chapman hit a single down the right field line to score two runs to give USF a 3-1 lead. The Friars pulled to within, 3-2, when freshman Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.) led off the bottom half of the seventh inning with a solo home run. It marked Rossi's first collegiate home run.

Surosky was impressive in the second game as she allowed two earned runs and struck out six batters in seven innings of action. Bree Spence earned the win for USF as she allowed two runs on five hits and struck out three batters.

Providence is back in action on Tuesday, April 11 with a doubleheader at URI.
