CHICAGO, Ill. - The Providence College softball team (19-6, 4-2) earned a BIG EAST doubleheader split against No. 23 DePaul (12-9, 1-1) on Saturday, April 1 in Chicago, Ill. The Friars defeated the Blue Demons, 5-4, in the first game, but fell, 4-0, in the nightcap. PC's win in the first game marked the second consecutive season that the Friars have defeated a ranked team. Last season, Providence posted a 1-0 win against No. 4 Tennessee.
PC junior pitcher Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) held DePaul to just two hits in the first game as the Friars went on to post a 5-4 triumph. Surosky, who allowed four runs and struck out six batters, earned her 12th complete game of the season and improved to 13-5.
The Friars scored four runs in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. Senior Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) highlighted the inning with a two-run single to increase her hit streak to 13 games. Romero finished with two hits, while junior Rachel Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), sophomore Sam Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) and freshman Mary Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) each had one hit to account for PC's five hits.
The Blue Demons countered in the fourth inning with three runs to cut the lead to 4-3. Freshman Jackie Tarulli-Fisher hit a two-run home run, while classmate Marcy Wilus followed with a solo homer. The Friars scored what proved to be the game's deciding run in the fifth inning when Romero led off with a base hit and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly by senior Tara Sullivan (Tualatin, Ore.). Wilus brought the Blue Demons within 5-4 in the sixth inning when she also hit a sac fly for her second RBI of the game. However, Surosky thwarted any chances of a DePaul rally in the seventh inning as she retired three straight batters after walking the leadoff hitter.
In the nightcap, DePaul freshman pitcher Stephanie Blagaich held the Friars to just three hits to lead her squad to a 4-0 victory. The Blue Demons took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a two-run home run by junior Kate Sheaks. They added two more runs in the fifth inning en route to the win.
Freshman Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) pitched four-plus innings and allowed four runs on six hits, while classmate Alisha Levin (Fort Campbell, Ky.) pitched one-plus innings. At the plate, Romero had one hit and increased her hit streak to 14 games. Bartholomew and Pittman also had one hit each.
The Friars continue their road trip on Sunday, April 2 when they face Notre Dame in a BIG EAST doubleheader at South Bend, Ind.
