OCOEE, Fla. - The Providence College softball team (3-1) split a pair of games on Monday, March 6 at the Rebel Spring Games in Ocoee, Fla. The Friars defeated Holy Cross, 4-3, in eight innings and fell to Monmouth, 3-2, in eight innings.

The Friars trailed 1-0 after four innings, but tied the game in the fifth. Sophomore Sam Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) led off with a single and advanced to second base on sacrifice by junior Katie Ross (Middleboro, Mass.). Senior Tara Sullivan (Tualatin, Ore.) then followed with an RBI double for PC's first run of the game.

The game remained tied until the eighth inning when the Friars scored three runs to take a 4-1 lead. Ross, freshmen Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.) and Lindsey Arria (Hanover, Mass.) each scored in the eighth inning, while senior Michele Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove in one run as the Friars enjoyed a three-run lead. However, the Crusaders bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 4-3. Sophomore Kelly O'Neil doubled to drive in both runs for Holy Cross, but the Friars were able to hold on for the win.

Classmate Alisha Levin (Fort Campbell, Ky.), who was making her collegiate debut, relieved Maccio in the sixth inning and pitched three innings to earn her first win.

In the second game, PC junior pitcher Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) tossed a complete game, allowing just three hits and striking out 12 batters, but it was not enough as Monmouth defeated the Friars, 3-2, in eight innings.

The Friars scored one run in the third and fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. Bowers had an RBI single in the third, while Arria tacked on another run scoring single in the fourth. However, the Hawks tied the game in the fifth inning with a pair of runs. Monmouth took the lead in the eighth inning when freshman Nichole Alvarez drove in the game-winning run with a double.
