Softball Opens Season With Two Wins At Rebel Spring Games

OCOEE, Fla. - The Providence College softball team opened its 2006 campaign with a pair of victories on Sunday, March 5 at the Rebel Spring Games in Ocoee, Fla. The Friars defeated Tennessee State, 11-2, in five innings and recorded a 1-0 triumph over Sacred Heart in the second game.

Against the Tennessee State Tigers, the Friars had their first four batters reach base, including freshman leadoff hitter Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.) who hit a single in her first collegiate at-bat. PC scored four runs in the first inning highlighted by junior Rachel Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), who smacked a bases clearing double. The Friars added three runs in the second inning, one in the fourth and three more in the fifth inning to complete the scoring. Bartholomew and senior Michele Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.) each batted 2-for-4.

On the mound, junior Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) pitched four innings, while freshman Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.), who was making her collegiate debut, pitched the fifth inning.

Surosky also started against Sacred Heart and pitched a complete game shutout to lead the Friars to a 1-0 win. She struck out 13 batters, including three in the first inning as she was able to escape a bases loaded jam. The Friars scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior Katie Ross (Middleboro, Mass.) reached on a bunt single and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Rossi. Bowers came through with the clutch hit as she ripped an RBI double to drive in Ross.

The Friars (2-0) will continue play at the Rebel Spring Games on Monday, March 6. PC will battle Holy Cross at 8:50 a.m. and Monmouth at 12:30 p.m.
