Softball Splits BIG EAST Doubleheader At Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Providence College softball (16-5, 3-1) team split a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader at Rutgers (6-19, 1-4) on Sunday, March 26 in Piscataway, N.J. The Friars won the first game, 11-1, in five innings for their eighth consecutive win, however, PC was defeated, 5-1, in the nightcap. PC has now won 13 of its last 15 games.

In the first game, PC belted 12 hits en route to an 11-1 victory. The Friars led, 2-1, after the third inning, but they erupted for nine runs in the fourth inning to take control of the game. Senior Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) began the scoring in the fourth inning when she smacked a two-run home run (her third of the season) to give the Friars a 4-1 lead. Romero, who batted 3-for-3 with three RBIs, was one of five Friars with multiple hits. Senior Michele Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.), sophomore Sam Pittman (San Diego, Calif.), freshman Mary Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) and senior Tara Sullivan (Tualatin, Ore.) all had two hits. Freshman Brittany Loisel led Rutgers with two hits.

Junior pitcher Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) earned her career-high 11th victory of the season as she went three innings and allowed one run on three hits and struck out one batter. Freshman Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) pitched two innings, allowing one hit and striking out one batter.

In the second game, Rutgers scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back en route to a 5-1 win. Freshman Sarah Kalka provided the big hit in the first inning when she hit a three-run home run to give the Scarlet Knights a 3-0 lead. Sullivan brought the Friars to within 3-1 in the top of the fifth inning as she led off with a solo home run to center field. It marked Sullivan's career high second home run of the season. However, freshman Amanda Heller responded in the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run of her own to increase Rutgers' lead to 4-1. Kalka added her second home run of the game in the sixth inning to complete the scoring. For the Friars, Romero had one hit to increase her hit streak to 10 games.

Senior Christina Gillman held PC to just one run on five hits while striking out eight batters. Surosky also started the second game and allowed four runs on four hits and posted six strikeouts in four-plus innings of action.

The Friars are back in action on Thursday, March 30 with a home opening double header against Quinnipiac, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
