Softball Opens BIG EAST Schedule With Doubleheader Sweep At Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Providence College softball team opened its BIG EAST Conference schedule with a doubleheader sweep at Villanova on Saturday, March 25 in Villanova, Pa. With the two wins, the Friars (15-4, 2-0 BIG EAST) have now won 12 of their last 13 games, including seven consecutive contests. Villanova fell to 4-17 overall and 0-2 in the BIG EAST.

Villanova led 1-0 in the opening game on an RBI single by sophomore Greta Holgrem. However, the Friars took the lead in the fourth inning as they scored three runs. Freshman Mary Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) hit two-run home run to cap off the inning. It marked Sheehy's first collegiate home run. The Friars scored another run in the fifth inning on an RBI double by senior Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) to increase PC's lead to 4-1. The Wildcats cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom half of the fifth inning when Cassie Koenig hit a solo home run. PC then added three runs in the seventh inning. Junior Rachel Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) hit a two-run single to complete the scoring. Sophomore Sam Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) and senior Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) each finished with two hits.

Junior pitcher Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) went seven innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits, while striking out five batters. Sophomore Kat Walsh also pitched seven innings for the Wildcats. She allowed seven runs on seven hits and struck out four batters.

Surosky also earned the victory in the second game as the Friars completed the sweep with a 4-2 win. Surosky, who improved to 10-4, pitched four innings and allowed one run on five hits, before giving way to freshman Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.). Maccio pitched three innings and allowed one run on four hits while striking out one batter.

PC scored three runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Willette hit an RBI single, while Romero's double down the right field line scored two more runs. Villanova cut the lead to 3-1 on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Lisa Curran, but the Friars added another run in the seventh inning as they loaded the bases and Sheehy was credited with an RBI when she was hit by a pitch. Willette and Romero each had two hits in the nightcap.

The Friars return to BIG EAST play on Sunday, March 26 with a BIG EAST doubleheader at Rutgers.
