GEORGETOWN, Del. - The Providence College softball team improved to 10-4 by winning two games at the Bash at the Beach Tournament on Friday, March 17 in Georgetown, Del. The Friars defeated LaSalle, 5-3 and rallied to record a 16-7 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson in five innings.
Against LaSalle, the Friars trailed, 2-0, after one inning, but senior Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) hit a solo home run to bring the Friars within, 2-1. The Explorers regained their two-run lead in bottom half of the inning. However, the Friars used a three-run fifth inning and added another run in the sixth inning en route to the win. The Friars had four hits in the fifth inning, and junior Rachel Bartholomew's (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) ground out that drove in freshman Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.), which proved to be the game-winning run. Romero, senior Tara Sullivan (Tualatin, Ore.) and sophomore Sam Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) each had two hits and one RBI.
Junior Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) earned her team leading fifth win of the season as she allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out seven batters. Laura DeZolt surrendered five runs on nine hits and struck out three batters. At the plate, LaSalle's Carissa Segura had three hits.
PC rallied from a 6-0 deficit in the second game and defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, 16-7. The Knights scored one run in the first inning and five additional runs crossed the plate in the second inning, thanks in large part to Hope Hillman who hit a grand slam. The Friars began their comeback in the bottom half of the second inning as Romero hit a two-run home run to cut the Knights' lead to 6-2. FDU then increased its lead to 7-2 in the third inning, but the Friars responded with four runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by Sullivan's two-run double to make the score, 7-6.
The Friars took control of the game in the fifth inning as they scored 10 runs on 10 hits (nine consecutive). Senior Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) capped off the inning with a two-run home run to end the game. Willette finished with four hits and four RBIs.
On the mound, freshman pitcher Alisha Levin (Fort Campbell, Ky.) entered the game in the second inning and earned her second win of the year. She pitched 3.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out two batters.
