ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Providence College softball team (8-4) split a pair of games at the Winthrop Invitational on Saturday, March 12 in Rock Hill, S.C. The Friars defeated Eastern Kentucky, 2-1, and fell to Pittsburgh, 2-0, in the semifinals.
Against Eastern Kentucky, freshman Jennifer Maccio (Huntington, Station, N.Y.) pitched six innings and allowed just one run on seven hits to improve to 2-0. Classmate Alisha Levin (Lexington, Ky.) came in the seventh inning and inhertited two base runners. Levin was able to get out of the jam as she retired the last batter on a pop up to earn her first career save.
At the plate, freshman Gina Rossi's (Bakersfield, Calif.) single in the seventh inning scored classmate Lindsey Arria (Hanover, Mass.) for the game-winning run. The Friars scored in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead as junior Rachel Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) hit an RBI single. Eastern Kentucky tied the game in the bottom of the second inning on a home run by Amy Mayrhofer.
Against Pittsburgh, the Friars were shutout, 2-0, as Panther pitchers Laura Belardinelli and Meghan Bostick combined for nine strikeouts and allowed six hits. Bostick earned the save as she pitched the last two innings.
Friar junior Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) also was strong as she allowed just two runs on three hits and struck out seven batters in six innings of action. The Friars had a chance to score in the seventh inning as they had the bases loaded, but could not convert.
