#14 PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (14-3, 3-1 BIG EAST): The Providence College field hockey team enters Sunday's BIG EAST game against No. 15 Villanova with a 14-3 overall record and a 3-1 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. Providence is currently ranked 14th in the STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches' Poll, released on October 17. The Friars are in the midst of a three-game win streak which began with a 2-0 victory over BIG EAST foe Syracuse on October 13. PC followed with victories over New Hampshire (4-1) on October 15 and Brown (2-1 OT) on October 18.
The Friars are led offensively by five players who have reached double figures in points. Senior Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) leads the team in points (29), goals (nine) and assists (11) through 17 games. Freshman Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) is second among her teammates in scoring with 19 points on seven goals and five assists. Senior Emily Ewens (Vancouver, B.C.) is third with 15 points on five goals and five assists. Junior Abby Maguire (Southbury, Conn.) and senior Lauren Sickel (Plaistow, N.H.) round out the team's double-digit scorers with 14 points and 11 points, respectively. Maguire owns six goals and two assists, while Sickel has recorded four goals and three assists.
Freshman Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) has been the Friars' primary goalkeeper this season and has logged 1120 minutes in the cage. She has allowed 18 goals and has made 85 saves for a 1.12 goals against average and a .825 save percentage. Six of her 13 victories in the cage this season have been shutouts, including two versus BIG EAST opponents. Senior Kim Vesling (Pittsford, N.Y.) made her collegiate debut in goal for the Friars on October 18 against Brown. In a 2-1, overtime victory, Vesling recorded five saves. It was Providence's first overtime game of the season. The Friars posted a 1-2 record in overtime games during the 2005 campaign.
The last time Villanova and Providence met was on October 23, 2005 in Villanova, Pa. The Wildcats earned a 4-1 victory in that meeting. The year prior, Providence dominated the Wildcats for a 5-0 victory in 2004. That game was played at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn.
The Friars will return to action on Wednesday, October 25 against in-state rival Rhode Island at 3:00 p.m. in Kingston, R.I. Providence will return home for their regular-season finale on Saturday, October 28 against Connecticut in a BIG EAST match-up scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Prior to the game between the Friars and Huskies, PC will honor its six seniors during a brief ceremony.
#15 VILLANOVA UNIVERSITY (12-5, 2-1 BIG EAST): The Villanova field hockey team enters Sunday's game against Providence with a 12-5 overall record and a 3-1 mark in the BIG EAST. The Wildcats are coming off of a, 4-3, overtime victory against Saint Joseph's on October 18 in their most recent game. Prior to that win, Villanova had lost back-to-back games against No. 5 Duke (7-2) on October 9 and No. 12 Louisville (5-2) on October 14.
Megan Foster and Allison Boris have teamed up to score 36 of the team's 59 goals on the season. Foster leads Villanova in scoring with 57 points on 23 goals and 11 assists. Boris has recorded 13 goals and nine assists for 35 points. Five other Wildcats have reached double figures in points.
Alex Whalen is the Wildcats primary goalkeeper, having played 1017:53 minutes in the cage. Whalen has allowed 34 goals and has made 75 saves for a 2.34 goals against average and a .688 save percentage. Whalen has an 11-4 overall record, which includes three shut-out victories. Erin Scott has played in five games, totaling 175:29 minutes. She has allowed six goals and has made 10 saves for a 2.39 goals against average and a .625 save percentage. Scott holds a 1-1 overall record.
