Over the fall of 2005, the Providence College softball team continued their ongoing tradition of helping out the Providence community. Many devoted and dedicated hours went into helping our neighbors and we are very grateful we had the opportunity to help out.

On Sunday, October 16th, we participated in our ninth Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. To help the American Cancer Society in their fight against breast cancer, we raised over $800 dollars in donations. We were 15 out of the 8,000 walkers taking on the 5K march that Sunday morning at Roger Williams Park. This particular Making Strides walk raised $600,000 to help continue the American Cancer Society patient support, education, research, and advocacy programs. We are proud to be part of such a good cause and look forward to it every year.

In addition to the Making Strides walk, the juniors organized the 10th annual Providence Softball Holiday Food Drive. We sent out 800 flyers to local neighborhoods around Providence College. We collected between 400 and 450 lbs of food that people in our surrounding neighborhoods donated. We gave the donations to the Rhode Island Food Bank, which was in a desperate need of food for the upcoming Thanksgiving season.

Lastly, for the second year in a row the Providence College softball team volunteered at the Rhode Island Festival of Trees on December 4, 2005. The Rhode Island Festival of Trees is a charitable organization founded by the Providence Warwick Convention and Visitors Bureau. The mission of the festival is to present an annual, state-wide holiday event which will also help raise funds for local non-profit organizations. All the items featured at the event including, trees, wreaths, raffle and auction items, and gift shop items were donated and were eventually sold. This year all proceeds benefited the young children of the Rhode Island Zoological Society, specifically the polar bear exhibit. As volunteers, the Friars helped with: greeting visitors at the festival, general assistance with live entertainment, supervision over the children's activity area, and the finalizing of sales for the tree and wreath exhibits.

We were so happy that we could help and support the community around us throughout this year. Although not all of us come from or live on the east coast, we all consider Providence our home. Our community is important to us, and we only wish we could give back more. We look forward to and will continue our hard work and dedication to this community for many years to come.
