PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team won its fifth and sixth consecutive games by defeating Rutgers, 1-0, 6-0, in a BIG EAST season-opening doubleheader on Saturday, April 9 at Raymond Field. With the two wins, the Friars improved to 22-7 overall and 2-0 in the BIG EAST. Rutgers fell to 0-26, 0-4 in the conference.
Providence's Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) led the Friars to the first game win. She pitched her third consecutive shutout as she allowed just two hits and struck out nine batters. For Rutgers, Lindsay Creaney pitched a strong game, allowing one run on five hits. However, the Friars were able to get to Creaney in the sixth inning for the only run they would need. Sophomore Rachel Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) doubled down the left field line, scoring senior Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.), who reached on a fielder's choice. Nicole Bartholomew struck out all three batters in the seventh inning to earn her 11th victory of the season.
The second game featured more solid pitching by the Friars as freshman Tanza Lewis (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) and sophomore Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) combined to post the shutout. Lewis went four innings, allowed three hits and struck out four batters. Surosky pitched three innings, allowed one hit and recorded four strikeouts. Providence scored one run in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.). The Friars broke the game open in the third inning, scoring five runs on six hits. Petersen's double to center field drove in two runs to make the score, 3-0. In the next at bat, Willette hit her fifth home run of the season as the Friars led, 5-0. Two batters later, junior Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) hit a solo home run to center field to complete the scoring.
The Friars are back in action on Sunday, April 10 with a home BIG EAST doubleheader against Villanova. The first game is scheduled to begin at noon.
