Softball To Open BIG EAST Conference Slate This Weekend

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team (20-7) looks to extend its four-game winning streak this weekend as it begins BIG EAST Conference play with a quartet of games at PC's Raymond Field. On Saturday, April 9th, the Friars welcome Rutgers (0-24, 0-2 BIG EAST) for a conference doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m. PC will also take on Villanova (22-14, 0-2 BIG EAST) in a conference twin bill beginning on Sunday, April 10th at 12:00 p.m. Follow the games live online by clicking on the links below.

Providence is led by senior Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) who is currently riding a five-game hit streak. The Golden State native also leads the team with a .402 batting average, a figure which also ranks among the top in the BIG EAST. Additionally, over the last five game, Petersen has gone 9-for-17 (.529) and seen her average rise 31 points from .371 to .402. She also leads the team with 13 multiple hit contests including four in the last five games.

Junior Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) also has been swinging a hot bat of late sporting a five-game hit streak as well. Collecting eight hits in her last 16 at bats, Willette has seen her batting average rise 44 points during that stretch to a season-high .325. She also has a home run and seven RBI during the stretch, and currently ranks second on the team with 21 RBI on the year.

On the mound senior Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) leads the team with 10 wins on the year and 115 strikeouts. Carrying a 1.24 ERA, she has tallied seven shutouts and allowed just 10 extra base hits over 96 innings pitched. In her most recent outing, Apr. 7th against Dartmouth, Bartholomew hurled a shutout and allowed just three hits over seven innings while striking out 11 Big Green batters. It also marked the third time this season she has struck out 10 or more batters in a game. As a team, the Friars hold a 1.33 team ERA, holding opponents to a stingy .188 batting average.

Rutgers is led by junior Helen Smith who has a team-leading .317 batting average, three home runs and 11 RBI. She is the only Scarlet Knights player batting over .300. On the mound sophomore Jessica Crosby leads the team with eight starts and 35.0 innings pitched.

Villanova is led by sophomore Sheri Donley who leads the team with a .310 batting average and 17 RBI. She is the only Wildcats player batting over .300. On the mound, senior Kristen Haynes (11-7, 1.02 ERA) has started 18 games totaling 90 strikeouts over 109.2 innings pitched. Classmate Shannon Williams (11-7, 1.54 ERA) also has started 18 games totaling 137 strikeouts over 109.0 innings pitched.
