SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Providence College senior pitcher Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) pitched her second career no-hitter, but the Friars were defeated, 3-0, at Seton Hall in the first game of a BIG EAST doubleheader on Saturday, April 30. Providence (33-18, 5-11) also fell in the second game, 3-0.
Bartholomew held the Pirates (30-13, 15-3) hitless in seven innings of action and posted eight strikeouts. She holds the school record for no-hitters (2) and is tied for the school mark with one perfect game. However, the Pirates scored one run on a wild pitch and one on a sacrifice fly in the first inning as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead. D'Arcy Djakalovic gave Seton Hall a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning as she stole home plate.
Seton Hall pitcher Megan Meyer also was impressive as she tossed a one-hit shutout to earn her 22nd victory of the season. PC's lone hit came off the bat of junior Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.), who singled in the fifth inning.
Meyer also shutout the Friars in the second game as she allowed no runs on four hits and struckout six batters. The Pirates scored an unearned run in the first inning and added two more in the third inning on a two-run home run by Laura Taylor to make the score, 3-0.
Bartholomew pitched the first four innings of the second game and allowed three runs on two hits, while striking out four batters. Sophomore Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) allowed two hits and struck out two in two innings of action. Offensively, the Friars had four different batters with one hit each, including freshman Sam Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) who had a double.
The Friars will play at St. John's in a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader on Sunday, May 1.
