The Providence College softball team (26-13, 4-6 BIG EAST) split a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader against Pittsburgh (17-21, 4-4 BIG EAST) this afternoon at PC's Raymond Field. The Friars hit four home runs and won Game One, 9-2. Pittsburgh came back to win Game Two, 3-2, in eight innings.
In Game One, the Friars pounded out 13 hits including four homeruns plating a run in every inning to cruise to the win.
Pitt jumped on the board first with a pair of runs in the first inning. The Friars answered with a run in the home half of the frame, to cut it to 2-1, Panthers.
Two innings later, junior Michele Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) blasted a two-run home run deep over the left field fence. The long ball came with one-out in the bottom of the third frame. It was her sixth home run of the year, and pulled the Friars ahead, 4-3, at the end of three.
Sophomore Rachel Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) knocked her team-leading ninth home run of the season in the fifth inning. It was a lead off solo homerun to start the frame.
In the sixth inning, sophomore Shannon Garvin (Fresno, Calif.) blasted her sixth long ball of the season. It was a two-run job, which knocked Panthers starter Christa Hunter out of the game. Hunter finished the game having allowed 12 hits, eight runs, seven earned over 5.1 innings.
On the other side, PC counterpart Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) scattered four hits en route to the complete game victory. It was her 17th complete game of the season, as well as her 13th win.
Junior Michele Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.) finished off the Friars attack as she greeted Panthers reliever Meghan Bostick with a solo home run in the sixth. It was her first collegiate long ball.
In Game Two, Nicole Bartholomew picked up where she left off throwing three solid innings to start the game. Pittsburgh did manage to plate a run in the second inning. Sophomore Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) relieved and pitched well the rest of the way.
The Panthers tacked on a run in the fifth courtesy a PC error, and the Friars trailed, 2-0, heading into the seventh. The Friars were held to just one hit through the first five innings. Pittsburgh starting pitcher Laura Belardinelli was impressive as the one hit through the first five frames was to Garvin, the first batter of the game.
In the seventh, the Friars came back with a two-out, two-run single to center by Garvin. She finished the game with three hits, and totaled five hits and four RBI on the afternoon. She was stranded at second base though as the next batter popped up to end the inning, and send the game into the eighth.
In the extra inning, Panthers designated player Christa Hunter deposited the second pitch she saw over the fence for what proved to be the game-winner. PC failed to get a hit in the last inning, left seven runners on base, and registered just three hits in the game.
PC softball returns to action on Tuesday, April 19th as the Friars travel to Central Connecticut for a doubleheader in New Haven, Connecticut. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
