ROCK HILL, South Carolina - The Providence College softball team (10-4) wrapped up play in the Winthrop Invitational with a 2-1 loss to the College of Charleston (26-9) on Sunday afternoon. Senior pitcher Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Cailf.) hurled seven innings, gave up no earned runs and fanned six but it was not enough as the Cougars scored a run in the bottom of the eighth to win it.
Sophomore Shannon Garvin (Fresno, Calif.) started off game with a lead-off homerun to give PC and early 1-0 advantage. It was her second home run of the season and ninth RBI, both figures tied her for the team lead. Garvin also led the team with a pair of hits on the afternoon while senior Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) notched the remaining base knock.
The Cougars would score an unearned run in the bottom of the third courtesy a PC error, and the score would remain tied 1-1, into extra innings. In the top of the eighth inning, PC had a runner of third with one out, but failed to score. The College of Charleston made the most of their half of the frame as Renee Francis led off the bottom of the inning with an RBI-single for the game-winner.
