ROCK HILL, South Carolina - The Providence College softball team (10-3) continues its spring trip at the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, South Carolina this afternoon having won each of the four contests it has played over the weekend. The Friars have posted the following victories, 6-3 over Towson, 7-5 over UNC-Wilmington, 9-1 over Furman and 2-0 over Mercer. Later today, PC will face the College of Charleston (25-9) with the winner advancing to a final contest against either Winthrop or East Carolina.

In the Friars' 6-3 tournament-opening win over Towson on Friday afternoon, freshman pitcher Tanza Lewis (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) notched a complete game totaling six strikeouts. The Friars used three runs in the third inning and three runs in the fifth inning to secure the victory.

On Friday evening, the Friars collected a 7-5 win over UNC-Wilmington as she broke a 5-5 tie with a run in the sixth and seventh innings. Senior Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) knocked home classmate Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas) with a two-out RBI. The Friars would add an insurance run in the next inning as freshman Sam Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) scored a run. Nicole Bartholomew started the game on the mound for PC.

In the Friars' 9-1 win over Furman on Saturday, sophomore pitcher Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) started the contest and went three innings allowing just one hit and one walk while fanning three. Offensively, the Friars jumped on the board early plating three runs in the top of the first inning. Senior second baseman Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) blasted an RBI-double down the left field line to put PC on the board. Junior Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) followed her with an RBI-double to left centerfield plating Petersen. Sophomore Rachel Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) followed with a single to right field sending Paladins' starter Erica Nesselroad to the showers having recorded just one out. Providence College would add a pair of runs in the top of the third as freshman Sam Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) pounded a two-run single to the pitcher plating Rachel Bartholomew and Petersen. Rachel Bartholomew went three-for-three for the game with a pair of RBI and two runs scored. The contest also saw PC freshman pitcher Erica Skeels (Littleton, Colo.) close out the game with two innings of relief.

PC finished up Saturday afternoon with an impressive 2-0 victory over Mercer. Senior Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) hurled a complete-game shutout striking out nine to lead the Friars. Three PC players collected two hits apiece including sophomore Shannon Garvin (Fresno, Calif.), senior Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.), and senior Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.). Sophomore Caroline Santilli (Westwood, Mass.) scored what proved to be the game-winning run as she was inserted as a pinch-runner for Bartholomew in the fifth inning.

The Friars return to action against the College of Charleston on Sunday, March 13th at the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, South Carolina. A win would put PC in the winners-game against either host Winthrop or East Carolina later Sunday afternoon.
