Softball Community Service

This fall we, the Providence College Softball team, continued our longstanding tradition of getting involved within the community by helping in every way we could. We lent our hearts and hands through many community service activities.

We kicked the Fall Semester off by helping the American Cancer Society in their fight against breast cancer. In October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we participated in the Making Strides against Breast Cancer five mile walk. This walk is the organization's leading event to raise awareness and money to fight breast cancer. We joined the past two million walkers, who have already raised 130 million through the organization. Our team gathered support from the PC student-body and raised $720 in donations. We are proud to continually be a part of this event, as this year marked our eighth year of participation.

In addition to the American Cancer Society's walk, we offered our support to the Sailing team who organized the Domestic Violence Awareness 5k. All donations were given to the Rhode Island Coalition against Domestic Violence and S.O.A.R. ( Sisters Overcoming Abusive Relationships). Although we were unable to participate, we were one of the acknowledged sponsors of the event.

Another long-held tradition that we have organized annually is our Providence College Softball Canned Food Drive. Each year, around Thanksgiving, we pass out flyers throughout the surrounding Providence communities; detailing the cause we are collecting the food for and the pick-up information. This year we decided to extend our donations once again to the RI Coalition against Domestic Violence. Due to the generous donations of our Providence community, we were able to donate close to 400 lbs of food, just in time for the holiday season.

In our next activity, we volunteered to help in whatever way needed at the first annual RI Festival of Trees. The holiday event featured a public display of one-of-a-kind, professionally decorated trees, as well as a showcase of handcrafted wreaths, a Gingerbread Village, musical entertainment, a festive gift shop, a children's activities area and a silent auction on all of the trees. We had a great time at this event, helping kids with arts and crafts, making cookies, helping with the on-stage performances and much more. Ironically, three of our teammates, generously and bravely volunteered their voices. "The Softball Trio", (Shannon, Rachel, and Nicole) became a last minute act, singing the holiday classic "Silent Night". It looks as though we have started another tradition!!

Our last community service activity, like the Holiday Festival, was a new activity for us. We lent our help to the Mary House Ministry, located at the St. Patrick Parish, just a mile or two down the road from Providence College. The Mary House Ministry began in 1974 when a group of Sisters of Mercy and a lay woman known as Mary House became aware of the hunger of their neighbors. Moved by the needs of those people, they opened a small food pantry, which still operates today. We were able to contribute to this cause by volunteering to assist at the Christmas Bizarre on December 4th, from 10 AM - 2 PM. We did a range of things from selling different items, helping sell food from the kitchen, working raffles, running games, cleaning up, and much more. All of the proceeds from the Bizarre went directly to the Meal Kitchen, to help feed the poor. The great response we got from the people from Mary House Ministry and the other volunteers made it an amazing experience.

It was an amazing year for us within the community. We will continue our hard work for many years to come.
