CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - The Providence College field hockey team was defeated by Harvard, 5-1, on Thursday, September 16 in Cambridge, Mass. Kate Gannon and Shelley Maasdorp each scored two goals to lift the unbeaten Crimson to their fourth-straight victory to start the 2004 season. Providence falls to 2-5 overall.
The Crimson scored two early goals to take a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of play. Gretchen Fuller scored first for Harvard 2:30 into the game off an assist from Gannon. Maasdorp followed with her first goal of the game at the 4:37 mark. The Friars finally got settled in and both teams played an evenly matched half.
With just under seven minutes left in the first half, the game was halted when the lights at Jordan Field went out. After a 20 minute delay, the teams returned to the field and PC netted its first goal of the evening to make the score 2-1. Junior forward Kati Lary (Canaan, N.H.) tallied the Friars' goal, unassisted, with 6:11 remaining in the half.
In the second half, Harvard scored three unanswered goals to take the decisive, 5-1 victory. Julie Lane scored off an assist from Maasdorp 1:43 into the action. Maasdorp scored her second goal of the night on a penalty corner with 20:12 remaining on the clock. Jen McDavitt and Gannon were credited with assists on the play. The Crimson added their fifth and final goal on a penalty stroke with 15:15 left to play.
Senior goalkeeper Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.) made five saves for PC in the loss. Aliaa Remtilla stopped three shots for Harvard.
Providence returns to action on Saturday, September 18 against Vermont. The game is scheduled to be played at Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. At 1:00 p.m.
