SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The BIG EAST Conference announced the 2004 All-BIG EAST Softball Team on Thursday, May 13 at the BIG EAST Softball Championship in Syracuse, N.Y. Providence freshman designated player Rachel Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) was named to the BIG EAST First Team, while senior utility player Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) earned second team honors.
Bartholomew becomes the first Friar freshman to receive All-BIG EAST First Team honors. Overall, she is the first Providence player to earn All-BIG EAST First Team accolades since Meredith Zenovich did it in 1996. In BIG EAST competition, Bartholomew led the Friars with a .364 batting average, 24 hits and tied for the team lead with four doubles. In addition, her .364 batting average and her 24 hits in BIG EAST play ranked 10th and fifth in the conference, respectively. She also ranked in the top-10 in the conference in home runs (4), runs batted in (13), total bases (40) and slugging percentage (.606).
Van Dusen, who saw action on the mound, outfield and first base, earned All-BIG EAST honors as a utility player for the second time in her four years at Providence. Van Dusen was PC's top pitcher this season. In BIG EAST games, she finished 10th in the conference in wins (5), third in innings pitched (74.2), third in appearances (14), first in games started (14) and fourth in complete games (14). In addition to her prowess on the mound, Van Dusen also was impressive at the plate. In 20 conference games, she led the league in home runs (8) and slugging percentage (.784). She also finished seventh in runs batted in (14) and third in total bases (40).
Providence finished the 2004 season with a 34-20-1 overall record, including a 10-10 mark in BIG EAST play, good for fifth-place. The Friars, who were picked to finish 11th in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, enjoyed their best season since 1995 when they posted a 38-17 overall mark, including a 12-8 mark in the conference.
