PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College will host Virginia Tech on Saturday, April 24 at Noon and Pittsburgh on Sunday, April 25 at 11:00 a.m. in BIG EAST softball action at Raymond Field.
Providence (27-17-1, 5-7) currently sits at fourth place in the BIG EAST standings after dropping both games of the double header, 1-0 and 7-1, at Notre Dame on April 18. Since then, the Friars traveled to Yale on April 21 and were defeated, 5-3 and 4-1, but rebounded to defeat Brown at home on April 22, 2-1 and 10-3. Junior Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) has continued her strong play for the Friars as she led off game two against Brown with her team-best eighth home run of the season. She also leads the team in hits (61), runs (30), average (.418) and is tied for the lead in doubles (11). Senior Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) is the Friars' top pitcher, registering a record of 12-8 in 22 starts and owns a 2.77 ERA.
Virginia Tech (32-18, 8-6) hangs just above Providence at third place in the BIG EAST. The Hokies will enter the weekend having lost their last two outings, non-conference matchups with East Tennessee State (L, 4-2) and Tennessee (L, 1-0) at the State Line Classic in Bristol, Tenn. on April 21. Sophomore outfielder Kelly Brown (Dale City, Va.) powers the offense with her .350 average, 57 hits and 36 runs. Senior Rachel Pacheco (Half Moon Bay, Calif.) leads the Hokie hurlers with a 13-3 record in 23 appearances and a 1.33 ERA. The Friars split with Virginia Tech last season in a double header at Blacksburg, Va. on May 4 (W, 5-1; L, 4-1).
Pittsburgh (18-26, 3-7) is currently tied for ninth in the conference standings and are winners of its last two BIG EAST games. The Panthers defeated St. John's, 2-1 and 4-3 (8), on April 18 at home. Pittsburgh, Pa. native Francesca DiMaria is batting .317 through 44 games and is averaging one hit per game. Freshman Laura Belardinelli (Endicott, N.Y.) has appeared in 36 games and sports a record of 9-10 with a 4.73 ERA. Pittsburgh and Providence each took a game in last year's meeting at Pittsburgh, Pa. (L, 1-0; W, 2-0).
