SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Providence College softball team split a BIG EAST double header at Syracuse, 7-6, 5-6, on Friday, April 16 in Syracuse, N.Y.
The Friars came back from a 2-0 deficit in the first game to earn a 7-6 victory over the Orangewomen. Syracuse took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run single by Erin Gray. The Friars tied the game in the third inning as junior Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas) scored on an error and freshman Shannon Garvin (Fresno, Calif.) scored on an RBI single by classmate Rachel Bartholomew (Coto de Caza, Calif.). Bartholomew had another RBI single in the fifth inning to give the Friars a 3-2 lead. In the sixth inning, the Friars scored three runs to increase their lead to 6-3. Karsnia drove in two runs on a double down the left field line. Garvin followed up Karsnia's at bat with an RBI single. The Orangewomen cut the lead to 6-4 in the sixth inning as Tanya Rose singled to left center to drive in Dani Delgado, who led off the inning with a double. However, Bartholomew belted her fourth home run of the season in the seventh inning to give PC a 7-4 advantage. Syracuse rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but senior pitcher Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) thwarted Syracuse's comeback attempt. Van Dusen earned her 11th win of the season as she pitched a complete game, allowed six runs (three earned) and struck out three batters. At the plate, Van Dusen batted 2-for-4 with one run scored. Syracuse's Haley Larsen took the loss as she allowed one run on one hit and struck out two batters in over one inning of action.
In the second game, Providence was defeated, 6-5, in eight innings. The Friars trailed, 4-0, after two innings, but scored five runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-4 lead. Rachel Bartholomew drove in two runs on a double and sophomore Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) hit a three-run home run as PC took its first lead of the game. Syracuse tied the game with one run in the sixth inning and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Cassie Morales hit an RBI single to drive in Jen Elderbroom. Freshman Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) started on the mound for the Friars and pitched six-plus innings, allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits and posted four strikeouts. Surosky was relieved by Van Dusen, who pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed two runs on two hits. Courtney Mosch earned the win on the mound for Syracuse in a relief effort. Mosch did not allow a run and struck out four batters.
Providence will play Notre Dame on Sunday, April 18 at 11:00 a.m. in South Bend, Ind.
