BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Providence College softball team split a BIG EAST doubleheader at Virginia Tech, winning the first game, 5-1, and losing the second game, 4-1, on Sunday, May 4 at Tech Softball Field.
In the first game, the Friars jumped ahead, 2-0, in the first inning on RBI singles by junior Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) and freshman Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.). Willette had three hits with one run in the first game. The Hokies scored their lone run of the game when Megan Evans hit her 11th home run of the season in the second inning to make the score, 2-1. In the fourth inning, PC freshman Tara Sullivan (Tualatin, Ore.) put the Friars ahead, 3-1, with an RBI single to left field. The Friars sealed the win in the sixth inning when Sullivan doubled to center field to drive in two more runs and make the score, 5-1. Sullivan had two hits and three RBI in the first game. On the mound, Van Dusen pitched her 10th complete game of the season as she allowed five hits and struckout one batter to earn a career-high ninth win of the season. Virginia Tech's Rachel Pacheco took the loss, allowing all five runs and strikingout four batters in five plus innings of work.
The Hokies used a three-run fifth inning to earn a 4-1 victory in the second game. Mindi Wylie, Caitlin Murphy and Evans each hit RBI singles in the fifth inning to put the Hokies ahead, 4-0. The Friars' run came in the sixth inning as freshman Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) singled to center field to drive in freshman Nicole Hull (Portland, Ore.). Melissa Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) took the loss for the Friars as she pitched four plus innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and strikingout three batters. Virginia Tech's pitcher Katie Maynard went the distance, allowing one run on five hits and strikingout six.
With the split, the Friars finished the regular season with a 20-24 overall mark and a 4-16 record in the BIG EAST.
