Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team swept Brown University, winning 3-2 in game one and 6-1 in game two, in a non-league doubleheader at Providence's Raymond Field.

In game one, sophomore firstbaseman Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) gave the home team the lead, connecting on a two-run home run to just left of straight-away centerfield. Van Dusen's third homer of the season plated freshman centerfielder Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas), who had singled with one out. The Friars (15-35-1 overall) increased their lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning when junior rightfielder Sarah Morin (Westerly, R.I.) singled, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on an error by Brown's catcher.

The Brown Bears (14-22 overall) got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning when centerfielder Laura Leonetti led off the inning by lining a hard shot to PC shortstop Jaclyn Treveloni (Ashland, Mass.). Leonetti scored two batters later on an error by the Friars' thirdbaseman. The Bears added a second unearned run in the top of the seventh inning, as Erin Durlesser reached on an error, and scored two outs later on a triple by Leonetti.

Providence junior Melissa Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) picked up her fifth victory of the season, pitching the complete-game, three hit win. She allowed just two unearned runs and struck out six batters.

In the second game, Brown scored the game's first run. Leonetti singled to open the game. Rightfielder Lauren Wong followed with a grounder to third, that PC's thirdbaseman fielded and over threw firstbase, allowing Leonetti to score. PC starting pitcher Cori Van Dusen, got out of the inning by striking out the next three batters. PC answered in the bottom of the first inning when, with one out, Karsnia doubled and Van Dusen singled to score in the freshman from second.

The game remained tied at 1-1 until the fifth inning when the Friars batted around and scored five runs with two outs. After two quick outs, sophomore leftfielder Chrissy Iannolo (Syracuse, N.Y.) singled to start the rally. Freshman secondbaseman Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) followed with a singled and then Karsnia reached on an error by the Brown shortstop that scored Iannolo. Van Dusen singled to score Petersen and went to second on the relay throw home. Freshman catcher Ashlee Weatherford (Woodland, Calif.) singled to the gap in right-center, driving in Karsnia and Van Dusen, and then scored PC's fifth run on Sarah Morin's double to right-centerfield. After a pitching change, Melissa Peterson and freshman infielder Kerri Kozlowski (Providence, R.I.) walked and Megan St. Ledger (Wilmington, N.C.) lined out to right to end the inning.

Van Dusen pitched the complete-game two-hitter for the Friars, allowing just one unearned run and striking out seven. Erin Durlesser and Uchenna Omokaro combined for six innings, seven hits, six runs, just one earned run and four strike outs.

Providence will complete the 2002 season with its final doubleheader on Saturday, May 4th when the Friars host the University of Pittsburgh in a 12 noon start.
