STORRS, CONN. -- The Providence College softball team split a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader at the University of Connecticut on Saturday, April 20th, winning game one, 2-1, and losing game two, 4-2.
In game one, PC's Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) was three-for-three at the plate with a RBI for the Friars (11-32-1 overall, 2-12 BIG EAST). Sophomore outfielder Chrissy Iannolo (Syracuse, N.Y.) and freshman outfielder Jackei Karsnia (Spring, Texas) scored the runs for PC. Junior pitcher Melissa Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) pitched a complete game in earning her second victory of the season. She allowed nine hits and just one run in the victory.
In the second game, UConn took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning and extended that lead to 4-0 after a three-run fifth off of PC starter Cori Van Dusen. The Friars scored their two runs in the top of the sixth and seventh inning with one of those runs coming on freshman catcher Ashlee Weatherford's (Woodland, Calif.) first collegiate home run.
The Friars did not help Van Dusen defensively, making seven errors in the first behind the sophomore pitcher. Van Dusen pitched six innings and allowed just five hits. She allowed all four runs, but just one run was earned.
Providence returns to action with a BIG EAST doubleheader at Syracuse on Sunday, April 21st. The first game begins at 12 noon.
