Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team split a doubleheader with the University of Rhode Island, winning game one, 1-0, and losing game two, 3-2, on Thursday, April 11 at PC's Raymond Field.

Providence junior pitcher Melissa Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) pitched a complete-game shutout to earn her first victory of the season in game one's 1-0 victory. The right-hander allowed six hits and one walk while striking out three batters in the win. The Friars (11-26 overall) scored the lone run in the bottom when freshman secondbaseman Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) reached base when she was hit by a pitch, was sacrificed to second, took thirdbase on a wild pitch and scored on classmate Jaclyn Treveloni's (Ashland, Mass.) sacrifice fly.

In the second game, Providence scored in the bottom of the first inning when freshman centerfielder Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas) singled, reached second on a wild pitch and scored on an error by the URI rightfielder. The Friars added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning on freshman catcher Ashlee Weatherford's (Woodland, Calif.) RBI single.

Sophomore pitcher Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) was cruising on the mound for PC into the seventh inning. She got the first batter in the seventh to ground out to the shortstop, but then surrendered back-to-back singles that put runners on first and second. After a groundout advanced each runner a base, Rams' leadoff hitter Chrissy Tindall singled to right to score both runs. Mel Gregory followed with a single that scored Tindall from second before Providence made a pitching change. With Rhode Island leading 3-2 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, the Friars were retired with a fly out and back-to-back strike outs.

Providence returns to action this weekend when they host St. John's University on Saturday, April 13th in a league doubleheader that begins at 12 noon. On Sunday, April 14th, the Friars host Seton Hall University in a conference doubleheader that begins at 12 noon.
