PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team was defeated in both games of a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader by Virginia Tech, 3-0 and 4-3, on Sunday, March 24 at PC's Raymond Field in the opening weekend of league contests.

In game one, Providence freshman righthander Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) had one bad inning where the Hokies (16-7 overall/2-0 BIG EAST) scored all three of their runs. To start the top of the fourth inning, VTU's Kathleen Jones reached first on a mis-played infield fly. Sarah Prosise reached base when she was hit by a Bartholomew two-strike pitch. After centerfielder Tiffany Hurt struck out looking, lead-off hitter Carmen Farmer lined a home run over the leftfield fence, where PC outfielder Chrissy Iannolo (Syracuse, N.Y.) ran out of room chasing down the line drive. Bartholomew was in control of every other inning, though, recording five of the first six outs of the game via the strikeout. She finished the contest with her fifth complete game and allowed eight hits, three runs - only one of which was earned, two walks and a career-high 12 strikeouts.

Virginia Tech had a pitching star of their own, as Clarisa Crowell shut down the Friars (5-17 overall/0-2 BIG EAST) in the first game by throwing a no-hitter. Providence managed just two base runners off Crowell - walks in the first and third innings.

In the second game, the offense took over with help from the longball. Crowell got the Hokies started off in the top of the second inning, leading off the inning with a solo home run to left-centerfield. Hurt led off the top of the third inning with a solo homer to centerfield and after PC sophomore Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) relieved Bartholomew, Amy Voorhees hit a two-run home run three batters later.

The Friars answered the Hokies in the bottom of the third inning, scoring their first runs of the series. With two outs, freshman outfielder Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas) singled and Van Dusen walked. Freshman catcher Ashlee Weatherford (Woodland, Calif.) followed with a two-run double to left center that plated both Karsnia and Van Dusen. PC pulled to within 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Bartholomew connected for her first collegiate home run, driving a blast to right-centerfield. After the Bartholomew home run, Hokie starter Ashlee Dobbe settled down, allowing just a single and walk in the remaining two-plus innings and she struck out two Friars in the bottom of the seventh to close out the contest.

The Friars return to action on Tuesday, March 26 when they travel to play at Quinnipiac University at 2:00 p.m.
