Softball Falls To 0-4 In California

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. -- The Providence College softball team fell to 0-4 in their season-opening California Tournament play, being defeated by Brigham Young University, 12-2, and Cal Poly Tech, 3-1, on Saturday, February 23.

Against BYU, the Friars got their first hits of the UC Santa Barbara Softball by the Beach Invitational, totalling four hits, two of those by junior outfielder Sarah Morin (Westerly, R.I.). Morin was two-for-two at the plate and drove in both Providence runs with a single and double. Freshmen infielders Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Jaclyn Treveloni (Ashland, Mass.) had Providence's other hits.

Against Cal Poly Tech, freshman hurler Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) gave the Friars their best shot at a win as she pitched seven innings and allowed seven hits and only three runs. She also struck out seven batters. The Friar bats managed four hits, including two from Kalena Petersen, but PC scored just one run and was defeated 3-1.

In their final action of the tournament, PC plays Iowa State on Sunday, February 24 at 9:00 a.m.
