SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. -- The Providence College softball team opened its season at the UC Santa Barbara Softball by the Beach Invitational on Friday, February 22 when they face Sacramento State and UC Santa Barbara.

In the first game against the Hornets, PC got a solid performance from freshman pitcher Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), who pitched 7.1 innings and allowed just three hits and one unearned run. The single run proved to be the game-winner, though, as Sacramento State won, 1-0. The Friars offense produced no base runners, though, as Sacramento State's Nicole Deatherage held PC hitless after entering in the game after the scheduled starter was lifted before facing a batter.

The Friars did not fare any better in the second game, losing to UC Santa Barbara, 13-0, in a five inning game. The Gaucho's Katie Junge held the Friars hitless but Providence had four runners reach base in this game. Sophomore Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) and junior Melissa Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) combined in the pitching effort.

The Friars continue their play in California, playing on Saturday against Brigham Young and Cal Poly Tech and on Sunday when PC faces Iowa State.
