ORONO, MAINE - The Providence College field hockey team was defeated by Maine, 2-1, on penalty strokes after two scoreless overtime periods. Providence's Lyndsey Brooks (New Fairfield, Conn.) scored her third goal of the season with 22-seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.
The Black Bears got on the scoreboard first as Tara Bedard netted a goal with 11:07 remaining in the second half off an assist from Jana Ouellette. The Friars tied the game, 1-1, as Brooks slipped a shot past the Maine goalkeeper with 22-seconds remaining in regulation, and forced overtime.
After two scoreless 15-minute overtime sessions, the two squads squared off against each other in penalty strokes. The Friars fell to Maine in the stroke-off, 2-1. PC senior sweeper Kara Lukens (Pennsburg, Pa.) gave the Friars an early, 1-0, advantage during strokes, but the Black Bears converted on their final two stroke attempts to earn the win.
Junior goalkeeper Meaghan Moran (Framingham, Mass.) recorded 10 saves for Providence in the loss, including a combined six saves in the two overtime periods. Jaye Lance saved 11 shots for the Black Bears, which also included six stops during the overtime sessions.
Providence (5-8) returns to Providence, R.I. for a three-game homestand that begins with Massachusetts on Wednesday, October 9 at 3:30 p.m.
