PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Umass, 3-1, on Wednesday, October 9 in Providence, R.I. Seniors Courtney Dow (Hampstead, N.H.) and Jennifer Chin (Norwood, Mass.) each scored one goal and added one assist to pace the Friar offense.
The Friars took a commanding, 3-0, lead into halftime. Dow (Hampstead, N.H.) scored PC's first goal, at the 7:05 mark, as senior Lyndsey Brooks (New Fairfield, Conn.) took the initial shot off a penalty corner. Brooks' shot was stopped by the UMass goalkeeper, Christine Tocco. Chin (Norwood, Mass.) collected the rebound and earned the assist as she passed the ball to Dow in front of the cage.
Chin put the Friars up 2-0 at the 28:30 mark as she connected on a cross from Brooks. Brooks was credited with the assist. Providence scored its third and final goal of the first half on a penalty corner with 3:36 remaining on the clock. Senior Kara Lukens (Pennsburg, Pa.) scored on an arial attempt off an assist from Dow, who took the hit out.
The second half remained scoreless until 3:06 left in the game, as Sarah Bohonowicz scored the lone goal of the day for Massachusetts to make the final score, 3-1.
Providence goalkeepers Meaghan Moran (Framingham, Mass.) and Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.) each saw time in the game. Moran did not make a single save in the first 56:20 of the game and held UMass scoreless. Jones relieved Moran with 13:40 remaining in the game and made one save. UMass goalkeepers Christine Tocco and Ashley Egland played 35 minutes each. Tocco started the game for the Minuetwomen, made five saves and allowed all three PC goals. Egland started the second half, made one save and held the Friars scoreless.
Providence improves to 6-8 overall and will host Rutgers in BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday, October 12 at 1:00 p.m. PC also will host Pacific on Sunday, October 13 at noon in a non-conference match-up.
