Softball Sweeps Holy Cross In A Nonconference Doubleheader

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team defeated Holy Cross in a doubleheader sweep as the Friars won, 5-1 and 1-0, on Tuesday, April 10 in Providence.
The Crusaders (9-15 overall) scored their only run of the day in the first inning of the first game when Shelly Richard singled, advanced to second on a single by teammate Nicole Vitti and scored on an error that would have been the inning-ending out.
The Friars struck back with their first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning when senior Nicole Nelson (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) singled in classmate Gwyn Mangini (Gansevoort, N.Y.). The Friars (17-15 overall) added three runs in the third inning when sophomore leftfielder Jamie Ferreira (Fall River, Mass.) singled and scored when senior catcher Kerri Jacklets (Sayville, N.Y.) doubled to rightcenter. Jacklets scored when Nelson followed with a double and then also scored when freshman Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) singled driving Nelson home.
Mangini scored the final run of the contest in the fourth inning reaching on a single and scoring three batters later when Nelson singled her home. Nelson was three-for-four in the game and had three RBI. Ferreira, batting second in the PC lineup, was three-for-three at the plate.
Sophomore Melissa Peterson (Huntington Beach, N.J.) earned her team-best eighth victory with a complete-game, three-hit effort which saw her strike out seven Holy Cross batters.
In game two, the only offense was Jacklets' first inning solo home run - her team-leading seventh of the season - to center field. Senior hurler Robyn West (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) pitched a complete-game, four-hit shutout and improved her pitching record to 6-4 on the year.
The Friars return to action on Thursday, April 12th when they travel to Kingston, R.I. to face the University of Rhode Island Rams.
