OSCEOLA, Fla. -- The Providence College Softball team opened the 2001 season in Osceola, Fla. at the 2001 Rebel Games with a 13-1 victory over the College of the Holy Cross and a 3-1 win over St. Joseph's (Pa.) University.
The Friars (2-0 overall) used a eight-run first inning to put the Crusaders (0-1) away early. Providence sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning with senior Gwyn Mangini (Gansevoort, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) opening the contest with a triple and batting a second time and contributing a RBI.
PC increased their lead to 10-0 in the third inning when freshman Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) smacked a two-run home run. The Friars added the final three runs in the fourth inning when they strung three singles and two walks together.
Senior hurler Robyn West (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) pitched a complete-game five-inning performance, striking out eight Holy Cross batters and allowing three runs in the final inning.
In the afternoon's game against St. Joseph's, Providence used a three-run third inning when freshmen Melissa Birmingham (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesse), Jess Van Nieuwkerk (Delta, British Columbia/South Delta Secondary) and Mangini all scored in the inning.
Sophomore hurler Melissa Peterson (Los Alamitos, Calif./Mater Dei) threw a complete-game shutout and struck out six batters in the victory.
The Friars return to action on Wednesday, March 7th when they face St. Francis (Pa.) University at 3:00 p.m. and UNC Wilmington at 7:00 p.m. as the 2001 Rebel Games continue from Osceola, Fla.
