PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team was swept by Dartmouth College, 2-1 and 2-0, in a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon in what was PC's home opener and the first games at the new Raymond Field complex on campus.
The Friars (11-7 overall) scored just one run in the two games and lost back-to-back games for just the first time this season.
In game one, Jennifer Madsen put the Big Green on top 1-0 in the top of the third inning when the number nine hitter in the lineup smacked a solo home run over the fence, 190 feet away in left field. PC scored in the bottom of the fourth inning when senior Nicole Nelson (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) singled and freshman Jessica Van Nieuwkerk (Delta, British Columbia) scored to tie the contest at 1-1.
Dartmouth went ahead, 2-1, in the top of the sixth inning when, with runners on second and third base and one out, Chiara Grabill hit a long foul fly ball to right field that was caught, allowing the game-winning run to score.
PC freshman Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) pitched a complete game and allowed just four hits while striking out a career-best eight batters. Her record fell to 2-2 on the season. Dartmouth's Chris Quattrocchi picked up the win while also going the distance and adding three strikeouts. She improved to 3-5 on the year.
In the second contest, the two teams were locked in a pitcher's duel. PC's senior Robyn West (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Dartmouth's Lisa Caruso each pitched complete-games, throwing nine innings. Caruso allowed eight hits and struck out two while West also allowed eight hits, but two of the hits were back-to-back solo homers to Jenny Harsay and Kisa Brannen in the top of the ninth inning.
The Friars return to action this weekend when they host Villanova University on Saturday, March 31st at 12 noon.
