Providence, R.I.- The Providence College softball team swept the University of Rhode Island, 5-1 and 5-2, this afternoon in Providence, R.I. Today's wins put the Friars at 20-23 overall, giving them their first 20-win season since 1996.
In game one, Rhode Island first got on the board in the top of the fourth inning as Robin Davies (Dalton, Pa.) hit an RBI single to center field to bring in Shauna Newmiller (Las Vegas, Nev.). Providence responded by scoring all five runs in the bottom of the fourth, led by Nicole Nelson's (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) three-RBI triple down the right field line. Nelson finished the game going 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
PC's Melissa Peterson (Santa Ana, Calif.) improved to 12-12 on the mound, giving up just three hits while striking out five batters. Rhode Island's Susan Chymbor (Bristol, Conn.) took the loss after allowing five hits and three earned runs in 4.1 innings of action. Christine Pederson (Barrington, Ill.) closed out the final 1.2 innings, only giving up one hit.
The Rams were also first to score in game two, as pitcher Gwen Rack (Pine Hill, N.J.) scored off of Beth Misiura's (Clarks Summit, Pa.) single to left field and Davies beat the throw to home plate to score. The Friars responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Kerri Jacklets crossed home plate first on a wild pitch, while Nelson knocked a two-RBI home run to center field. PC added two more runs in the fifth, as Jacklets hit a RBI double down the right field line to bring in Bonnie Skrenta (St. James, N.Y.), and pitcher Heather Nathan (South Hempstead, N.Y.) had a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in pinch runner Missy Francz (Westfield, N.J.)
Nathan picked up her fourth win of the season, only allowing one earned run, while Rack fell to 8-12 on the season.
After today's game, Providence improved to 20-23 overall, while Rhode Island fell to 16-25-1 overall.
Providence returns to action on Saturday, April 29, when they host the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers University. Game time for the doubleheader is slated for 12:00 p.m.
